In the first part of this talk I will review the recent realization that a large class of two-dimensional theories of dilaton-gravity in asymptotically AdS space are holographically dual to a random matrix model. In this description the matrix represents a random boundary Hamiltonian, and its probability distribution depends on the dilaton potential in a specific way.
